TUCKNESS
Evidences of the Family in the Philadelphia Area and in New Jersey
Corrected to 2 April, 1997, contributed by Hugo hugoschro@aol.com, please direct inquiries to him.
EUROPEAN ORIGINS OF THE TUCKNESS FAMILY
There is no indication in the German IGI that this family name has ever been found in that country.
The name Tucknes first appears in England in Sussex, in 1558, when a Margett Tucknes was baptized. In 1567 there an Agnes Tucknes was baptized. Margett Tucknesse was married in 1575 to a Morgin Henly, as was a William Tucknesse (a brother) to Bridget Henley in 1577. The last appearance of the family in Sussex occurs in 1621 when Thomas Tucknes was married to Patience Cooper.
At about the same time, the family surfaces in County Kent in England, where in 1576 Alse (Alice) Tucknes was married to Edmund Hygham. In 1598 Edmond Tuckness, s/o John, was baptized. The family remained in Kent through the 17th and 18th centuries as follows:
Date Name Event Other names mentioned

1705 Harie (Harry) Tuckness or Huge Bapt Fa: Batholomew Tuckness
1707 Robert Tuckness Bapt Fa: Bathol Tuckness
1713 Batholomew Tuckness Bapt Fa: Batholomew Tuckness
The family next appears (apparently as a transplant) in London as follows:
1741 Batholomew Tuckness Bapt Fa: Bartholomew Tuckness
1774 Batholomew Tuckness Bapt Fa: Bartholomew Tuckness
1788 Charles Tuckness Bapt Fa: Batrholomew Tuckness
1791 Elizabeth Tuckness Bapt Fa: Bartholomew Tuckness
1812 Ann Elizabeth Tuckness Bapt Fa: Charles Tuckness
1816 Charles William Tuckness Bapt Fa: Charles Tuckness
Apparent transplants are also found as follows
1851 Mary Louisa Tuckniss Bapt Fa: Richard Tuckniss (County York)
1864 Edward Vernon Tuckniss Bapt Fa: William Tuckniss (County Surrey)
In light of the various spellings of the name, it seems likely that our family came from London, where the double-S was used, and that it traces back through Bartholomew Tuckness to County Kent (who apparently was the one adopting the double-S spelling).

The first named was approved."
ROBERT TUCKNESS--fr Minutes of Pa Provincial Council, 11 Dec 1758: [PaCR Vol 8, p234)
"The Commissioners appointed by the Act for preventing abuses in the Indian Trade, &c, recommended Robert Tuckness, Abel Janny and Benedict Dorsey as suitable persons for agents at Fort Allen. The first names was approved." [At this time the French outpost at the Forks of the Ohio, Fort Duquesne, had just been overthrown and the commissioners were making provision for the forts on the frontiers.]
[Fort Allen was located in modern Carbon County. It had been built in 1756 under the direct supervision of Ben Franklin after the massacre at Gnadenhutten, and was considered by Governor Morris to be one of the 3 most important posts east of the Susquehanna. As negotiations with the Indians proceeded in 1758, on April 18 the province enacted an "Act for Preventing Abuses in the Indian Trade , for supplying the Indians, Friends and Allies of Great Britain, with goods at more easy Rates, and for securing and strengthening the Peace and Friendship lately concluded with the Indians inhabiting the Northern and Western Frontiers of this Province." The commissioners for Indians Affairs had already established a trading post at Fort August (Sunbury), and on now were inaugurating the second at For Allen. Robert Tuckniss was appointed the agent in charge. For more information see Forts on the Pennsylvania Frontier, 1753-1758, William A Hunter (Harrisburg: Pa Hist and Museum Commission, 1960).]
ROBERT TUCKNISS--fr Minutes of Pa Provincial Council, 4 March 1759 (PaCR, 8:286)
"A recommendation, Signed by the Indian Commissioners, was presented to the Governor, wherein three Persons were nominated by them to His Honor as Suitable for Agents on the West Side of the Susquehanna, the same being read, the Governor was pleased to prefer George Allen to the other two named in the Recommendation, and he was Commissioned as Indian Agent in the Room of Robert Tuckness, who had resigned."
[Tuckness thus served as Indian Agent at Fort Allen for only three months or so. Note that the new appointment was to a post on the West side of the Susquehanna; perhaps the location of the post was being changed.]
ROBERT TUCKNESS--on 27 Nov 1760 Robert Tuckness witnessed a deed satisfying a mortgage of James Lowry for 2 tracts in Donegal Township, Lancaster County (Lanc Deeds, Bk F, p272. [Was he present in Lancaster on military business at the time? It seems he was not a permanent resident there.]

[Mormon Ancestral File, submission by E. Jay Nielson, 862 Oakridge Dr., Farmington, UT 84025].
