Generation No. 1
1. HENRY1 TUCKNISS1 was born Abt. 17272, and died October 15, 1785 in ,Lancaster, Lancaster, PA3. He married ANNAMARIA (MARY) FINNIS May 08, 1755 in Gloria Dei (Old Swede's) Episcopal Ch, Philadelphia, PA4,5,6.
ORIGINS OF THE TUCKNESS FAMILY
The Tuchness family probably came to America from England. The name does not occur in the German IGI of the Mormon Family Search Program, while the British IGI contains exactly 50 occurrences, spelled variously Tucknes, Tuckness, Tuckniss, and Tucknesse. Of these 50 occurrences, 36 are in Kent; 5 in Sussex; 6 in London, 2 in Surrey and 1 in York. An examination of these records makes it appear like that the family arose in Sussex and Kent, spreading in time to London, then Surrey and York as well as America.
In addition to the Tuckness name, the name Tuckney occurs often (in a wide variety of location). Sometimes the Tuckney name occurs in the plural as Tuckneys, providing a possible origin of the name Tucknes/Tuckness.
On these shores the family appears to arise in New Jersey/Pennsylvania with Capt Henry Tuckness whose will, recorded 23 November, 1714, identifies him as a mariner living in Burlington, New Jersey [1]. He appears in 1705 as a purchaser in the estate of Joseph Adams, of Burlington [2].
Perhaps Capt. Henry Tuckness' wife was the Mary Tuckness who purchased items from the estate of John DeWildy of Salem Co, N.J., in 1706/7 [3]. Henry's will indicates that he had two sons, Henry and Robert.
Son Henry was a cordwainer. He married Ann Vaughn in 1733 at the Upper Springfield Twp MM and lived in Burlington until his death in 1759. He left issue at his death: Robert, John, James and Mary.
A Robert Tuckniss [possibly the son of Henry and Mary] married Mary Blackham in Christ Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, on 10 January, 1737. She was the daughter of Josiah and Mary Blackman of Burlington, NJ. [5], so we may assume the young couple had come from that area.
Apparently this was his second marriage. He died just months later, [if the record given in the NJ Archives is correct, but there is a question about the date, as the inventory is dated 10 years later] leaving issue John (son of Mary nee Blackham) and Johnathan, Abraham, Judith and Sarah.
Probably the Robert and Mary Tuckniss who appeared in Philadelphia, originated in Kent Co., Delaware, where a child, Mary, was born in 1738. Soon thereafter they moved to Philadelphia. Three sons were born to this union: Robert, Jr., Henry. and John. Mary, wife of Robert, was buried 10 August, 1778, in Philadelphua. According to the records of the Philadelphia Monthly Friends Meeting [6] on 28 October, 1763, Robert converted to Quakerism.
Robert's son, Robert Tuckness, Jr., was born in Philadelphia about 1740 [7]. He married married Mary Dawes, dau of Abraham Dawes, on 5/15/1764 at Plymouth Meeting, Philadelphia Co., PA. [8]
On 11 Dec 1758, the Provincial Council, upon the nomination of the Commissioners "to prevent abuses in the Indian Trade," appointed Robert [the elder?] its agent at the Trading Post of Fort Allen in Carbon County. Fort Duquesne had just fallen to General Forbes, and serious efforts were being made to regulate the Indian Trade so as to prevent offences to the Indians. As spring approached, Tuckniss resigned the commission on 10 March, 1759.
Robert Tuckniss appears as a witness to a Deed of Release on 27 Nov 1760 in Donegal Twp., Lancaster, Co. [7] Perhaps he was there in some military capacity at the time.
The indications that Robert Tuckniss was the father of Henry are: 1) Robert Tuckniss had a son named Henry. 2) A Robert Tuckniss witnessed a mortgage for Henry. 3) Henry Tuckniss named three successive sons Robert (two died),indicating that the name carried series meaning for him.
Henry Tuckness of Lancaster, PA
Henry Tuckniss' birth is estimated from his burial entry in the records of the Lancaster Moravian Church, where his death is listed as having taken place on 15 October, 1785, when he was 58 years of age.
Henry Tuckness, "an apprentice lad," was published in the PENNSYLVANIA GAZETTE of 6 Aug 1747 as a runaway by Isaac Downs, a hatter in Philadelphia [10]. We assume that it was from Downs that Tuckness learned his trade as a hatter.
In 1756 a Henry Tuckness was taxed #10 in the North Ward of Philadelphia [11]. A Henry was also taxed in 1774 in the Northern Liberties of Philadelphia (no land, cattle, horses or servants). Perhaps these were two different men, as our Henry's daughter Margaretha Sarah was baptized in Lancaster in 1762. Or, alternately, he must have retained property in Philadelphia, though he now lived in Lancaster. He does not appear on Lancaster tax records until 1779.
From the following two real estate transactions we estimate that Henry moved to Lancaster about 1760: ( 1) On 27 November, 1760, Henry Tuckniss satisfied a mortgage to James Lowry on two tracts in Donegal Township, Lancaster Co, which had been mortgaged for #800 on 4 February, 1757 by Jer. Warder, Edw. Shippen,
Thos Lawrence, Isaac Levy, Jos. Simons, Jn. Mifflin and Amos Strattel, administrators of the estate of William Edgell, deceased. The witness to this mortgage was Robert Tuckniss [12]. (2) On 1 May, 1762, Henry Tuckniss purchased lot No. 100 on the East side of Queen Street for #3 [13].
In 1779 Henry Tuckniss was taxed in Lancaster Borough, Lancaster County as a hatter, having no land, cattle, horses [14]. According to Ellis' History of Lancaster County, he was also counted on the 1780 "census" as a tailor; and Lancaster Co taxes returns show he was taxed again in 1782 as a hatter (no lands, horses, cattle or servants) [15]
Henry Tuckney (Tuckner)'s will is transcribed in Lancaster Co. Will Book E, Vol. 1, pp285-86. It mentions his wife Mary, younger children Elizabeth and Robert, and adult children Mary Kough (wife of George Kough), Henry Tuckney, Sarah Odenwalt (wife of Christian Odenwalt) and Catherine Tuckney. The will was made 1 October, 1785, and probated 20 October, 1785.
