- Hi Cousins,
I believe that we now have proof that our "Old Henry" is connected to the
Philadelphia Tuckness Line. I got my uncle, Paul Eugene Tuckness
(great-great-grandson of Old Henry), and Stewart J. W. Tuckniss (5 X
great-grandson of Robert "the Hatter" Tuckness/Tuckniss) to both do a DNA
test. We got the results today..........and BINGO.......a 12 marker match.
Here are the lines as we know them:
Known ancestors of Paul Eugene Tuckness:
"Old" Henry Tuckness b. ca 1794? d. 1834 Maury Co, TN
John Wesley Tuckness b. ca 1835 Maury Co, TN
Albert Andrew Tuckness b. 1865 in Dallas Co, MO
James Roscoe Tuckness b. 1899 in Dallas Co, MO
Paul Eugene Tuckness b. in Dallas Co, MO lives in
Denver CO
The first thing we know about "Old" Henry is that he enlisted for seven
months on 28 Sep 1814 as a Private in Captain Robert Edmonson's Company,
1st Regiment Mounted Gunmen, (Col Robert H. Dyer's) Tennessee Volunteers.
The documents state that the men of this company marched 130 miles from
Clarksville in Montgomery County, Tennessee, their place of residence, to
Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee, where they were mustered into
service. This unit took part in the Battle of New Orleans in Jan 1815. We
do not know who his father was, but do know that a Henry Tuckness was
listed in the 1790 census in Pasquotank, NC. We also know that he was also
a hatter. He may have been the father of "Old" Henry, but we don't know
for sure.
Known ancestors of Stewart J. W. Tuckniss:
Robert (the Hatter) Tuckniss b. ca 1740 Philadelphia, PA
Abraham Tuckniss b. ca 1775 possibly Philadelphia, PA
Benjamin Fuller Tuckniss b. 1801 Demerara, BG
Richard Austin Tuckniss b. 1824 Demerara, BG
Charles Wentworth Tuckniss b. 1861 Lancashire, UK
Charles Stewart Tuckniss b. 1825 Lancashire, UK
Bernard Wentworth Tuckniss b. 1922
Lancashire, UK
Stewart J. W. Tuckniss Lives in London
Robert (the Hatter) Tuckniss/Tuckness was of course a hatter and had his
shop on Market Street in Philadelphia. He married Mary Dawes 15 May 1764
at Plymouth Meeting, Philadelphia, PA. Robert (the Hatter) was probably
the son of Henry (the Cordwainer) Tuckniss/Tuckness and Ann Vaughn who
married ca. 1733 at Upper Springfield Twp MM, Delaware Co, PA and the
grandson of Captain Henry Tuckniss/Tuckness of Burlington, Burlington Co,
NJ who sailed between Philadelphia and the Caribbean.
Benjamin Fuller Tuckniss, was born in Demerara in South America, was
baptized Christ Church in Philadelphia, and died in England. He was
babtized on 12 Apr 1801. That was his parents' 5th wedding anniversary.
Source: Records of Christ Church: Baptisms, Historical Society of PA. His
great-granduncle and aunt were married in that same churchin 1736/7.
Bottom line: We now know that our "Old Henry Tuckness who died in Tennesse
was related to the Philadelphia Tuckniss/Tuckness line. We also know that
one branch of the Philadelphia line went to (or back to) England and
Stewart J. W. Tuckniss is a member of that line.
We still do not know who "Old" Henry's parents were, but I think we are a
lot closer than before the DNA test. I now need to expand the tests to 25
Markers and see what that tell us. Stay tuned.....................and let
us hear from you.
